Foil Boat Experiment

What you'll need:

A tub of water

Aluminum Foil

Pennies, assorted coins

Or any house hold objects

Use aluminum foil to make a boat, then predict how many pennies you think the boat can hold.

Fill a plastic bin or sink with water and see how many pennies the foil boat will hold before sinking. Does weight matter with whether or not something sinks or floats?

I had my daughter separate the the pennies out and then count them as she put them in, then count them again when we took them out (I know sometimes she skips numbers). We stacked the pennies by 10's to help with the counting process.

This is a great example of buoyancy, and with using the coins you reinforce your children's knowledge of the different coins. As your child grows you can revisit this experiment and make a couple different styles of boats and see if one design will hold more weight than another.

Day and Night Diorama: Earth and Sun Diorama

My daughter started Kindergarten this year and I've been amazed at the amount of things that they get taught. She is currently in a half day class and this week has her first "show and tell" presentation. The purpose is to have a question then using a scientific method explain what you were curious about:

1. Problem - What do you want to find out?

2. Research - What do you know and want to know?

3. Hypothesis - What is a possible solution to the problem?

4. Experiment - Do the experiment and show it's results.

5. Conclusion - Is your hypothesis correct?

We had a hard time figuring out what she should do for her project and finally she came up with a wonderful question. She wanted to know where the sun goes at night. Her thoughts on the matter were fantastic! "The sun goes to sleep in the moon", was her answer. What a sweet thought! Well, dad and I put our heads together on a way to show her what really happens.

We needed to somehow show the sun, the earth and have the earth able to turn(rotate).

For this Diorama you'll need:

1. 1 Box

2. Black/ Ski Blue / Green / Ocean Blue Paint
3. 1 Styrofoam Ball

4. Orange / Yellow construction paper for the sun

5. Flashlight

6 wire hanger (unfold to be straight, use a a little more than half to coil around a pencil, the other half is to stick through the earth)

7. Cotton balls for the clouds

8. Star stickers, or cut your stars out of construction paper

9. Another piece of cardboard to place in the bottom of the diorama to hold the wire hanger.

First you'll need to cut the box, we used an X-acto knife to cut a window on one side and the top off. Once that was done we spray painted the outside black, and painted the inside black and blue to represent night and day.

On the blue side we cut a whole and inserted a flashlight to be the sun.

We had Lorelei make the sun out of construction paper which could also easily be painted as well.

On the black side we had her stick on the stars for the nights sky. Next was to paint the earth. I drew on the outline of the continents and Lorelei painted the oceans and land herself. She was very proud of herself to make an earth! We added a Colorado flag to use as a point of reference. It could easily be the American Flag.

With the flash light shining on the earth we were able to show that it's day time when its on our side of the planet and night time when the planet rotates to the other side. The concept is still a little advanced, but the diorama is great at showing the basic idea of day and night.

Help your children with early writing skills by having them trace their name onto wax paper! Sandwich their name written on a wordstrip or other paper inbetween folded wax paper. Have them trace over their name with marker (prefereable to crayon or pencil which won't show up as clearly). Save the wax paper each time and track your child's progress.
Why this works:
~Enhances name recognition, which gets them ready for Kindergarten and promotes self awareness
~Kids aren't staring at a blank page, expected to produce their name out of thin air. Perfect for beginning writers.
~I prefer the word strips because they are slim and easily fit between the wax paper. Also, writing on wordstrips shows the correct proportion for lettering. And can be found at the dollar store!
~Tracks your child's writing progress from week to week. If you save your slips of paper (and date them), you will begin to see their writing smooth out as the days progress. Little Dude does this every morning! Pretty soon, he will be a master at writing his own name!
~This technique can be used with other tracing projects (shapes, numbers, etc.)
